Amazon Key is a Big Deal

by Drew Meyers on 3:52 pm October 25, 2017

Let’s be clear. Amazon Key is a big, big deal — for many reasons. It hit Product Hunt today, and the comments touched on a couple major points worth noting. It’s a brilliant — yet extremely obvious –move given their massive Alexa/Echo investment into the smart home opportunity. $250+ is an expensive home upgrade/purchase for many. Amazon already taxes deliveries. Now, they are going to take a tax on groceries, dog walking, deliveries, etc — as well as making money on selling home owners the actual lock to … Read More »

Echo Plus’ Impact on the Smart Home

by Drew Meyers on 11:30 am October 3, 2017

I think the new Echo Plus is a game changer for the Smart Home (a topic I’ve been writing about). I don’t have any “connected devices” in my home, so it’s hard for me to comment on how easy setup is. That said, in theory, Echo Plus will automatically recognize and setup all your devices. Have a look at the video…

The Smart Home & Amazon Alexa (and Echo)

by Drew Meyers on 9:58 am September 30, 2017

When talking about Amazon and their strengths and weaknesses for coming out on top for the looming (massive) smart home opportunity — you have to include both Echo (hardware) and Alexa (software) in the equation. While they are intertwined now, that’s not going to remain the case. The Echo is, of course, Alexa’s first customer. However, The Echo is not Alexa’s only customer. An ever increasing range of devices will utilize Alexa’s voice assistant in the future (the tools for integrations are already live). The more devices utilizing … Read More »

A Strategic Look at Smart Homes

by Drew Meyers on 8:55 am September 24, 2017

I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about Smart Homes, and who is best positioned in the race to control the home. The players with the best chance are clearly Amazon, Apple, and Google. Of those, I’d say the lead has to go to Amazon at this stage in the game given how well Alexa is selling. Sleepers? Zillow, ADT, and Facebook. (they would all need major strategic acquisitions or partnerships to pull it off) What are the ways into the home with a … Read More »

Echo Goes Visual

by Drew Meyers on 8:45 am May 10, 2017

I received an email from Amazon yesterday… In order for the Alexa to deliver an amazing experience for many scenarios — certainly a real estate one — it needs a connected screen. Echo Show is that screen. The $229 price is a bit steep, but I’m sure that will come down a bit over time. I’m not sure what would entice me to buy another $200+ home electronics item, but it would have to be pretty compelling (unless it replaced my Apple TV). Maybe it’ll be an in-home … Read More »

Alexa: I Bit the Bullet

by Drew Meyers on 12:51 pm January 8, 2017

After having thought on it for awhile — I finally ordered an Echo Dot this week, and it arrived on my doorstep yesterday. Why’d I bite the bullet, even though my gut is the only thing I’ll actually use Alexa for is to play music? The Echo Dot is only $50, so it’s not a huge investment. Beyond that, as a product person — I want to understand the fuss about Alexa and have a good grasp on consumer behavior based on first hand experience, rather than … Read More »

Will the Amazon Echo (aka Alexa) Power the Future of Real Estate?

by Drew Meyers on 7:45 am December 28, 2016

I almost bought an Echo Dot for $49 this week (affiliate link), but didn’t quite pull the trigger. Earlier today in Inman’s FB group (Yes, you should attend), I came across the following demo video from Voiceter Pro (they bill themselves as the conversational search company) of the Alexa real estate app they’ve built. I don’t know about you, but it seems to be an inferior search experience to what buyers have today. Why not just pull out your iPad (or phone) and Zillow, Redfin, or Realtor.com? It would take … Read More »
