Let’s be clear. Amazon Key is a big, big deal — for many reasons. It hit Product Hunt today, and the comments touched on a couple major points worth noting. I think the new Echo Plus is a game changer for the Smart Home (a topic I’ve been writing about). I don’t have any “connected devices” in my home, so it’s hard for me to comment on how easy setup is. When talking about Amazon and their strengths and weaknesses for coming out on top for the looming (massive) smart home opportunity — you have to include both Echo (hardware) and Alexa (software) in the equation. While they are intertwined now, that’s not going to remain the case. The Echo is, of course, Alexa’s first customer. However, The Echo is not Alexa’s only customer. A few minutes after I published my post on Smart Homes, I saw the news that Walmart is testing in-home delivery of packages and groceries (TechCrunch). That means you don’t need to be home when the delivery happens, and the products are left inside your home rather than left on the doorstep for a thief to snatch. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about Smart Homes, and who is best positioned in the race to control the home. The players with the best chance are clearly Amazon, Apple, and Google. Of those, I’d say the lead has to go to Amazon at this stage in the game given how well Alexa is selling. Sleepers? Zillow, ADT, and Facebook. There was news about HomeKit this week, which I’m sure is going to be a major player in the connected-smart home market over time. Apple has added interactive HomeKit experiences to 46 retail stores worldwide. Game changing news? Certainly not. But more foot traffic experiencing a connected home experience is good news (for the entire connected-smart home industry).
