Give a Realtor a "Fish" You Feed Them for a Day! But..
There is an Ancient Chinese Proverb that goes something like…”Give a man a fish and you feed him for the day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for life”. Seems like more & more as I try to “Teach” a Realtor to create content for their website, or utilize one of the many fine Web 2.0 tools available to them, they instead want me (or someone else) to “Give” them the tools, or more to the point, do it for them! I am employed by my Broker to teach, not do.
I sit with Agents for 1/2 hour at a time, once or twice a month each. How could I possibly “Do it” for them anyway? I am an eternal “optimist” I believe that Realtors want to learn how to do these things, they just are fearful, like we all can be, about the “journey”.
I submit to you & them, as FDR said “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself”! More to the point that quote continues…”Nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat and advance.” Today, I spoke before about 75-80 of my 300 Realtors (Northern Offices in 2 weeks) about the Internet, Web 2.0, Blogs, Social Media, etc…while also introducing a package from my Marketing Dept that designed and/or upgraded their existing websites to Flash for a “Dirt Cheap” price of $199. I had 25 orders for the package and 2 Realtors wanted custom content for 10x that. I was “reborn”! Do I know that the price we were offering them was the “real” catalyst? heck ya! but it’s not the whole story, the whole story includes the desire and the understanding that the Internet will bring their careers to another level, and that it is our future.
They showed me commitment today, I was impressed! I spoke of amazing web 2.0 tools like MLBroadcast, which creates a video out of still photos and uploads it to places like iTunes, & hosts of other video portals. ListHub, which broadcasts a listing to all the major listings sites and the Agent only has to set it up 1 time, they do the rest! Cell Signs, that not only acts as a Digital Brochure, but can be marketed as a completely Mobile MLS solution. I saw them jotting (Ha, Jotting, we told them about JOTT.com too!) down notes like it was 8th grade “Sex Ed” class! Today, I felt like I may have actually taught some Agents how to “Fish”. Today I may have fed some Agents for a lifetime. Today was a good day! Agents: “Stop”, “Learn”, “Grow”, & “Prosper” ~ The Coach

Posted at 11:53h, 07 MarchI agree. It’s gratifying to see agents learn the new tools. Just like with paperless transaction utilities, like Relay, it just makes the whole process easier.
Real Estate is all about networking. Why wouldn’t an agent use the new networking tools that the rest of the world is using?

Posted at 12:15h, 07 MarchI couldn’t agree with Eric more. Once we get a large percentage of agents (and brokers) that really understand what they are doing and why, it is going to change all of our businesses for the better. Unfortunately, I think it is something that is going to happen over time as the next generations of RE agents become the majority. I just don’t think it is going to be possible to teach / convince a large percentage of the majority with the time that we have on why all of this is so important when they haven’t had to deal with this for the last 25+ years to do business and be successful. That doesn’t mean we stop trying though. They just want to sell real estate not be website experts or social marketing stars. But it is happening. Not as fast as all of us would like though.
Hopefully we’ll see more of you on here in the near future Eric.

“Give a man a free fish… and he’ll know where to go to buy fish.”

Posted at 16:58h, 07 MarchGreat Article Coach, Couldn’t agree more. Not enough Agents realize the many benefits from utilizing the newest tools. It’s networking at it’s best really.

Posted at 15:50h, 08 MarchI thought this article was right on the money. The future is in technology and we need to teach our Realtors to “fish” through the use of technolgy. This article illustrated that point very well.

Posted at 17:25h, 09 MarchGreat article “Coach” I too was at that class and didnt have enough paper at the end to keep the notes. We all have to force ourselves to get out of our box. Great point !

Posted at 09:01h, 10 MarchAs a Realtor, I can only say how exciting it is to find out about these tools. Just like any other job, the tools help the worker produce and these tools that Eric mentioned will be added to the arsenol to help me become an efficient and productive Realtor.
Thanks Coach.

Posted at 00:03h, 26 MarchAt first, HECK YEAH it’s scary!
What do I write about? Am I good enough? But I don’t want to sound like an idiot! It takes too much time!
If you made it through ’07 and you’re still here in ’08, you’ve earned the right to be confident. It’s like getting interviewed and hired on the spot. They ask you to come back for training next week on Monday…you’ve earned the right to walk confidently the next time you’re in the office! You got the job…you’re the sh*t! (Sorry, I’m trying to emphasize a point).
The point being…you’re in Real Estate and if you’ve been here this long, you’re damn great at what you do! So be confident and start writing. The blog-o-sphere is waiting for your contribution 🙂
So start writing…stay up-to-date on the tools that will create efficiency and always keep your head up!
