Is Blogging a Chore or a Passion?
Even though I no longer work at Zillow, I still browse around in Zillow Advice every now and then since that community was part of my daily life for so long. This evening, while making my rounds, I saw a question that caught my attention — “Blogging – is it a chore or a passion?” — and thought I’d share my response here.
Great blogs are ones written by those who view it as a passion. Crappy blogs are written by people who view it as a chore.
All the GREAT bloggers I follow — people such as Fred Wilson, Sloane Berrent, Jay Thompson, and Kris Berg — are passionate about what they do.
How do you view your “blogging time” — passion or chore?

Posted at 15:47h, 16 NovemberThanks for the compliment, Drew. The reality, though, is that it can be both. For me, when it starts moving toward the prescriptive (I must post three times a week; I must write at least one post about contracts, one about the real estate industry, and another about meatloaf lest I lose the affections of my three readers with varying interests), it’s a chore. When I do it for me (yes, admittedly with business in mind) — when I write because think I have something to say and not when I just think I need to say something — it is a pleasure. At least twice a day, my husband or I, mid-sentence, will blurt, “That’s a blog post!” When you find yourself thinking in those terms, you’ve found the passion.

I think you’ve got the right balance between chore and passion. And I don’t think the fact that you have your business in mind is a negative at all. In fact, all the examples I mentioned – Fred, Jay, Sloane, and yourself – all write with their business in mind. The fact they you are all passionate about your businesses, and it’s obvious in your writing, is what makes the blogs so great to read.

Posted at 00:18h, 20 NovemberWriting merely for the purpose of putting up content clearly shows on the writing (I know it has for me). But when writing about something that is interesting to the author, the audience can certainly see the authenticity. When I first started blogging it was more about putting up content, now I write when I have something worthwhile and I think it shows in the quality of the content.

Posted at 18:46h, 23 NovemberAs a real estate marketer I tell my clients that it is crucial to their business. As a real estate agent….I am missing the boat and I know it. I hate to write — I am thinking of hiring a ghost writer to start the skeleton and then edit for my style of writing.

Posted at 23:18h, 23 NovemberIt’s important to pursue your blogging aggressively, but at times it can be daunting… so it may feel like a chore, but you must muster the passion for writing to press through to be successful!

Posted at 09:06h, 30 NovemberDefinitely blogging is passion. And it takes a lot of time to write. Sometimes it’s not useful. But anyway..it’s passion

Posted at 11:53h, 01 DecemberHow hilarious, I was just asking myself that same question. Phrased a bit differently of course. I was looking around at other real estate bloggers wondering if I should start my own. A couple of things that crossed my mind was do I have enough to write about, and would anyone else find it worthy of reading. And then there was the question do I really want to blog, or do I have to blog? I still havent decided. Maybe I dont have the passion for it and I certainly dont want to put a crappy blog out there.

The great thing is that a blog can actually be your entire web presence. There is nothing that you need on your website (market stats, home search, community tours, contact forms, etc) that can’t be integrated into a WordPress.org blog. So even if you don’t decide to write a bunch of content now, I’d still recommend setting up a blog now with WordPress.org to give you the long term flexibility you need. From an SEO standpoint alone, you’re more likely to attract traffic than with a standard static website.

Posted at 23:47h, 01 DecemberMy blog is definitely a passion – and that’s the only reason why I do it. Maybe it’s different because I have nothing to promote or sell. My blog is about What Sam Saw Today literally! It’s like my personal property auction diary …and luckily I love what I do!! (which I hope shows!)
