Meet the Real Estate Tech Entrepreneur: Zeb Dropkin
In our latest Meet the Real Estate Tech Entrepreneur interview, we’re speaking with Zeb Dropkin of RentHackr. Zeb and I had coffee in NYC prior to him heading to Chile for the Startup Chile program, but is now back in New York again.
Here’s a bit more about him, from his own mouth…
What do you do?
I run an early stage startup to let you see what apartments cost all around you, and when they’ll become available. It’s called RentHackr.
Why do you do what you do?
Rental housing search is broken. It makes us wait until the very last moment to find a place, it lacks transparency, and a lot of the information we are able to find turns out to be bad.
I found out the hard way that searching for an apartment still sucks. I knew there had to be a better way. I started building RentHackr.
What are you most excited about right now?
Shipping! It’s been a long time of thinking, wireframing, learning, talking, making, changing, and remaking. And that’s never going to stop entirely. But we’re finally on the cusp of shipping a real, valuable product that will put apartment seekers in apartments they couldn’t find anywhere else but on RentHackr. We’re stoked for that.
What’s next for you?
Building and selling… what else? 😉 As a product, a company, a team, and myself – we have a ton of work to do. One achievement unlocked takes us to the next, bigger challenge. Specifically, fundraising and recruiting are going to take up the bulk of my time through the end of 2013. If you know someone who could be a terrific advisor, an interested investor, a proactive creator (developer and/or designer), or even a ridiculously hardworking intern, please give us a shout on [email protected].
What’s a cause you’re passionate about and why?
I’m a proponent of the Sharing Economy, or Collaborative Consumption, hashtag #collcons. As more of the human race grows up and lives our lives in bigger and bigger cities, I believe we have to learn how to share more and own less. We see this behavior rising up in fits and starts, often with support from newer technologies. Think Artsy, Lyft, and Kickstarter. We see it in the metoric rise of coworking spaces in major cities. I’m passionate about helping people consume less because they can get a better return in $$ and <3. If this piques your interest, I recommend starting out over at Peers.org.
Thanks to Zeb for sharing his motivations and current projects. If you’re interested in connecting with Zeb further, you can find him on Oh Hey World and LinkedIn.
We’ll be featuring other real estate tech entrepreneurs in the coming weeks. If you are an entrepreneur in the real estate vertical (past or present), and want to be profiled, please sign up for an OHW account and add “real estate tech entrepreneurs” as an interest on your profile — then shoot me an email (drew at ohheyworld).

Posted at 09:54h, 20 August[…] Given how crazy broker fees are there, it’s no surprise New York City is a hotbed for startups working on medium and long term rentals — Flip is also there (see prior coverage here), as well as RentHackr (see here). […]
