World Housing, and a Podcast with Graham Brewster

by Drew Meyers on 8:00 am June 5, 2016

Did you know more than a billion people in the world live in slums like this… I don’t know about you, but I believe that’s a problem worth addressing. Along with Giveback Homes and New Story, there’s another organization focused on the intersection of housing and social good. World Housing based in Vancouver BC. The organization applies the Toms Shoes one-for-one model to real estate. When you buy a condo, a home is built for a family in the developing world. I listened to the … Read More »

Interview with New Story Co-Founder Alexandria Lafci on the Social Entrepreneur Podcast

by Drew Meyers on 9:52 pm June 4, 2016

I’ve written about New Story before, and had the chance to meet Alexandria and Brett in New York in January. Alexandria was recently interviewed on the Social Entrepreneur podcast (which I’ve been listening to religiously since I was on it). Listen away…

Seattle…Come On. Giveback with Giveback Homes.

by Drew Meyers on 10:16 pm May 31, 2016

There are only 4 real estate professionals who are members of Giveback Homes in Seattle. What’s up with that? For such a socially conscious city home to organizations such as Gates Foundation, Global Partnerships, and Fred Hutch — I’m disappointed. I wanted to give huge props to the current members here in the Seattle area: Stephanie Kristen at Windermere Real Estate Phil Greely at Windermere Real Estate Gael Goodwin at Foundry. Living Real Estate Brian Losh at Ewing and Clark The rest of Seattle (Windermere, Coldwell Banker Bain, John L Scott…) — … Read More »

Q&A With Robin Leigh of Certified Charitable Giving Alliance

by Drew Meyers on 8:00 am February 5, 2016

Another company I spoke with while in New York last week at Inman Connect’s Startup Alley was the Certified Charitable Giving Alliance (CCG Alliance). I spoke with co-founder and CEO, Robin Leigh, for a few minutes and learned a bit about her mission and organization. Since it’s not exactly a secret I’m a fan of anything in the social good space (see this), I asked her to answer a few questions and she obliged. Her answers are below… What do you do? The CCG Alliance™ creates and … Read More »

GiveBack Homes at Inman Connect

by Drew Meyers on 8:45 am January 22, 2016

It’s no secret I’m a fan of Giveback Homes, as I’ve written about their organization numerous times. One of their co-founders, Caroline Pinal, will be speaking on stage on Thursday at Inman Connect, so don’t miss it if you’re attending the conference. There are a number of other Giveback Homes members speaking throughout the week as well, all of whom you can find here. I’ll be helping Caroline at their Vendor Alley booth off and on throughout the conference, so please do stop by and say hi. Look forward … Read More »

The Turn On Podcast

by Drew Meyers on 12:45 pm December 15, 2015

1000Watt announced the Turn On Podcast today, and released the first version. Head on over and listen. One thought I come back to after listening to a few of Marc’s thoughts on a broker loving local, is the socially conscious broker/agent. A brokerage could really tell a great story around supporting a specific cause (assuming they are actually doing it, and not just talking about it). Imagine a scenario where a brokerage was heavily partnered with an organization such as Scripted. Maybe the market wasn’t ready for … Read More »

Earth Enable – Building Better Floors in Rwanda

by Drew Meyers on 9:58 am December 9, 2015

I saw Earth Enable last night, and thought it quite a fascinating project. It’s not really real estate technology, but it has a real estate angle (flooring in Rwanda) and worth sharing nonetheless. 80% of Rwandans and over one billion people worldwide live in homes with dirt floors. Dirt floors are just what you’d think: dirty. Dust is kicked up during dry season, puddles stick around during the rainy season, and floors become a breeding ground for mosquitos and parasites. But concrete floors are just … Read More »

Many of you know today is #givingtuesday. I recommend you giveback by becoming a member of Giveback Homes. Or Kiva. Or The AdventureProject (which is what I donated to earlier today). Or any other cause you care about. And yes, Black Friday is a con. [Graphic via Mary]

New Story – The Home & Community

by Drew Meyers on 9:47 am

I just watched the following video, a short presentation by Brett at New Story (which I’ve written about before): Given I’m a sucker for community, one thing I picked up on was that Brett mentioned that building homes leads to lasting community. Money can’t build community, only time — given the time it takes to build a home, I’d have to agree with Brett. Beyond the time spent building those homes, those homes end up as locations for community gatherings for years to come. So, … Read More »

Change Heroes – Fund a Home, Then Build It

by Drew Meyers on 9:43 am November 13, 2015

I was speaking to the founder of HelpingB (crowd funding for social good ideas) because we’re thinking about doing a campaign for Horizon to get us onto Android. On the call, she told me about Change Heroes, which helps people campaign with 9 other friends to build homes in Latin America (in partnership with Techo). They also help you go actually build the home yourself. Change Heroes’s campaign with Techo reminds me of NewStory (coverage) and Giveback Homes (coverage). It goes without saying, I’m a massive fan of … Read More »
